First Edition. 8vo. Cloth. Very Good / Good ++. First Edition, First Issue, 8vo; in the publisher's lime-green boards with gilt lettering to the spine, some minor bumping to top and tail of spine, and a small patch of fading to just above the decorative gilt, pages of clean and unmarked. The Victor Ross-designed jacket is bright but shows wear; some dirt on the back panel, minimal fading to the spine, and also some chips and loss along the top of the spine. There is also a noticeable chip extending to the top of the title on the front panel, and the jacket is also price-clipped. Chatto and Windus, London, 1954.
A rare first edition of Murdoch's first novel, following her academic publication on Sartre. Extremely rare in the dust-jacket, and all in all, a very nice bright copy, despite the somewhat negative description!
