A stunning hand-carved, and decorated polychrome fish decoy by Howard Winter, of Capital Falls, Upper Michigan in the 1940s or 50s. One of nineteen made through Mr. Winter's life, this sparkling two-tone pike is painted in white and red. The white body and fins are further decorated with spackles of glitter in red, silver, blue, and gold. The tail and head are deep red, with further decorative black detailing and yellow and black eyes. Four white painted metal fins, and one white painted metal dorsal fin behind the embedded ring for the line. Metal weight to the underbelly. The fish does show some wear with some peeling to the paint on the body revealing a silver paint layer beneath. General expected rubbing as the decoy has obviously been used. An utterly charming piece in very good vintage condition.
A stunning example of American sporting art.
Length: 5" in length and 1" in width including the fins.
