Large 8vo; deluxe edition, fully bound in elaborate embossed calf in the Gothic style, gilt title "Cowper" to centre of front board, owner's name Jennie A. Finch, and date May 17. 1865 to upper and lower of front board, five raised bands on spine, further gilt lettering, rubbing to leather along the hinges and corners but all hinges strong and good, heavy gilt edges, pages generally bright and clean and unmarked, occasional foxing there and there. Steelplate engraving frontispiece by J.M. Butler, tissue guard, somewhat foxed, occasional engravings throughout, including 3 in volume 1 by William. G. Jackman, all with tissue guards, some light foxing here and there but generally condition is very good, no jacket, as issued. Leavitt and Allen, New York, no date.
A beautiful book, possibly given to Jennie as a prize, or graduation gift in 1865. Looks beautiful both as a decorative object, or in a book collection.
Condition: Very good vintage.
Measures 9.5" by 6" by 2.75" and weighs just over 4lbs.
