A rare signed Joseph Holdcroft majolica "Bark" pitcher dating from the 1880s. The exterior of the piece has been decorated to look resemble bark, with the handle the gnarled green stem of a dogwood bush. White dogwood blooms stand out against the rich chocolatey brown glaze of the ground. Stamped J. Holdcroft to base.
Condition: Many of these jugs were used in pubs around the UK during the late Victoria period and this particular example looks like it may have put in a few days' work! While the condition is generally very good, there is a large chip to the edge of the lip near the stem. There is some further roughness around the rim and a couple of light cracks to the interior glaze. These flaws are reflected in the price.
A lovely example of the British aesthetic movement -- and which, despite its flaws-- is still a beautiful piece from a Majolica master.
